HAND GLAZED TILES: Handmade Tile

Cotto Artistico Del Mugello

Handmade Tile

These tiles are literally made by hand, from very dense and heavy red-bodied Italian terra cotta from the Mugello, the area that spreads from Northern Florence to the Tuscan—Emilian Apennines. In this collection, certain glaze colors are always applied on the smooth biscuits and others are always applied on the rough ones, as decided by the artisans.  The results are dramatic! Some glazes ooze and bleed into the contours and crevices and roll over the edges of the tiles and others pool or spread on the surface in glimmering reflections of lush color reminiscent of the pigments of Tuscany, itself.

A close up of Verde Mela (Green Apple). This intensely saturated color also shows off lines of movement, which can be mesmerizing when seen in a 12 by 12 format on a shower wall or a floor, for example.

A blend of Paglia (pale yellow), Miele (honey) and Grano (deep yellow) make up yet another rich mélange of tones.
